Mask leaks and leak alarm

  • Quote

Postby DJL » Wed Aug 28, 2013 5:32 pm

I have a Resmed S9 and use the Smartstart/stop feature,. I also have a slightly high leak rate, I looked at my Sleepyhead data today and the average leak was 12 and the 95% was 32.
The problem is recently I have been removing my mask during the night and then falling back to sleep Last night this happened for a period of 2.5 hours and so today my headache is worse that normal.
So, if I turn off the Smartstart/stop feature and turn the leak alarm on, will my slightly high leak rate keep triggering the alarm all night or is the alarm level set high so that it only works if the leak is really high (like taking the mask off).

Thanks Dave

Test it while awake to see.

I didn't know that the S9 AutoSet had a leak alarm. I thought that was only for the S9 VPAP but maybe they have added something new.

I used to have your issue and found that changing masks until I could finally tolerate keeping mine on without ripping it off at night, helped.

Took a long time...My insurance company was a bit lenient with me about this. My therapist told me that most are pretty nice and understand it is a matter of comfort.

Thanks for your replies.
Pugsy, I think you are right that there is not a leak alert. My old S8 Autoset had an alert and so I assumed that the S9 would also have it. When I went back on CPAP treatment after a 18 month break, I used my S8 for a few weeks before I got the S9. I thought because the S9 was newer/better it would have it, but I looked at the S9 manual and there is nothing about the alert. I did look at the S8 manual and it is there, glad because I thought I was finally going mad due to lack of sleep.
Not sure why they did not include the leak alert on the S9 if they could do it with the old technology on the S8, must be some logic?

Cowgirlzoom, During my first 30 days back on CPAP I tried four masks and this nasal pillows is the best off them all. Maybe I will try some of my old masks and see if there are any better.

Thanks Dave

Well I was scratching my head about that one too. They put it on the S9 VPAP....but it wasn't very loud and was real easy to sleep through for quite a while ....been there done that . Same thing with the Respironics Leak alert...tiny beep about like the beep when you turn the machine on (for those that don't have the silent option). Next to useless in volume.

Take a couple of short pieces of some sort of tape and use that tape across the side straps of your mask. Tape it to your cheeks. Just enough that when you remove the mask and not realize it that there is some discomfort from the tape pulling on the skin and hopefully will wake you up enough to stop the unwanted behavior (removing the mask).
