What are SPN and FMI codes? ›

SPN stands for Suspected Parameter Number which tells you the circuit where the fault occurred. For example, if you had a SPN 1791 code, it would point to a fault detected in the EGR Valve Control Circuit. FMI stands for Failure Mode Indicator which tells you the reason the fault code was set.

ECU three is an indication of a code within the transmission control module. This is not the actual fault code but the identifier of what circuit and control module a problem exists.

Fault code 3719 is for high soot level.

The FMI may indicate that a problem with an electronic circuit or an electronic component has been detected. The FMI may also indicate that an abnormal operating condition has been detected. The codes are displayed in the form “SPN – FMI”.

The first character indicates the system or area of the vehicle where the problem is located. For example, “P” stands for powertrain, “C” for chassis, “B” for body, and “U” for network communication. The second character, usually a “0” or “1,” signifies whether the issue is generic (0) or manufacturer-specific (1).

Active codes refer to current malfunctions that have tripped your check engine light. Pending codes refer to intermittent faults that the system needs to see happen in consecutive warm-up cycles to be considered active.

Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)

Indicates an engine emissions-related fault, including, but not limited to the aftertreatment system.

If one of the modules cannot communicate with the ECU, that module will set a diagnostic trouble code and turn on the check engine light. The computer will also turn on the check engine light itself, if it has an internal problem that is causing it to misinterpret data.

Code P0606 tends to be set when a PCM/ECM has failed. Depending on component condition and the make and model of a vehicle, it may be possible to resolve an internal integrity fault in the PCM/ECM by upgrading or re-flashing the control module.

What is Cascadia Code 3251? ›

SPN 3251/FMI 1 - GHG14

This diagnostic is typically Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) Pressure Out of Range Low. This fault code sets when the pressure across the DPF is less than 1.5 kPa (0.2 psi) for more than 10 seconds.

SPN 3599/FMI 4

Description This Code Sets When the Aftertreatment Control Module (ACM) Detects a Short to Ground on Pins 9, 15, or 39.

A service principal name (SPN) is a unique identifier of a service instance. Kerberos authentication uses SPNs to associate a service instance with a service sign-in account. Doing so allows a client application to request service authentication for an account even if the client doesn't have the account name.

How to Check SPNs. Use the setspn -l hostname command at a command prompt to display a list of the SPNs that a computer has registered with Active Directory, where hostname is the actual hostname of the computer object you want to query.
